#MySafeSummerJob Aims to Spread Awareness About Youth Workplace Safety
Join Us in Spreading Awareness About the Dangers Young Workers Face

Every minute a young worker between the ages of 15 and 25 is injured on the job. Every day a young worker loses their life in a workplace incident.
As part of a social media campaign created by OSHA, BCSP has joined the #MySafeSummerJob movement in an effort to spread awareness to youth, educators, parents, supervisors, and employers about the importance of workplace safety.
The #MySafeSummer campaign will take place between April 15 and May 17 this year. Each week will have a separate theme, with the first week dedicated to spreading information about workers’ rights to a safe workplace.
BCSP will be participating in the second week, which is devoted to spreading information about hazards in the workplace and the importance of identifying and reporting hazards before they become safety incidents. We will be posting a variety of information, including true stories about youth workers being injured on the job.
According to NIOSH, the top industries in summer youth employment are retail, construction, and leisure and hospitality. The leisure and hospitality sector accounts for 48% of teenage workers and is where most teenage injuries and illnesses occur. Thirty eight percent of teens injured on the job worked in the leisure and hospitality sector, with the retail trade being the second highest, accounting for 21% of all injuries.
The goal of the #MySafeSummer campaign is simply to stop workplace injuries and illness. Most workplace injuries are preventable, with most injuries occurring due to unsafe equipment, stressful conditions, and pressure to work faster. It’s important that the youth know how diagnose potential hazards, and that their employers know that the youth are the most at-risk when it comes to workplace injuries.
